Your Pool Table FAQs Answered by Sydney Billiards Expert

What size and type of pool table do I have?

There are several standard pool table sizes, including 6ft, 7ft, 8ft, 9ft, and 10ft (snooker).  Full-size snooker tables measure 12ft.  Beyond size, there are various styles of pool tables, from classic designs to modern showpieces.  If you're unsure about your table's size or type, feel free to contact us with photos or measurements for assistance.

Do I have enough room for a pool table?

For comfortable gameplay, we recommend at least 4ft of clearance around the entire table, with 5ft or more being ideal.  Tight spaces can be addressed with a shorter cue stick.  We can help you assess your space and recommend suitable table sizes.

Room sizes above are ideal playing space (1.5m) from the inside edge of cushions around the table with standard cues. However, with the use of shorter cues a smaller size room can be utilized.

Can I reuse the felt (cloth) from my table?

In most cases, if the previous felt was removed carefully, we can certainly reuse it.  However, there's a slight chance that insufficient material remains for proper reinstallation.  We'll assess the felt's condition during a service call.

What is used to seam the slates and fill screw holes?

We use a special quick-drying filler specifically designed for slate pool tables.  This flexible filler accommodates natural settling or shifting in your home, preventing cracks that could damage the felt.

What should I look for when buying a used pool table?

Here are some key things to check:

  • Slate integrity: Look for cracks or damage.

  • Cushion responsiveness: Bounce a ball off each rail to ensure proper bounce-back, indicating healthy cushions.

  • Overall condition: Inspect for warping, loose components, or worn-out parts.

Can you share some tips for maintaining my pool table?
Absolutely! Here are some helpful pointers:

  • Leave the moving to the professionals: Avoid DIY moves to prevent damage to yourself and the table.

  • Regular cleaning: Vacuum the table surface to remove debris. For a deep clean, Sydney Billiards offers a comprehensive service that includes pockets and internal components.

  • Sun protection: Keep your table out of direct sunlight to prevent felt discolouration and drying of wood or leather components. Filtered sunlight through window coverings is acceptable.

  • Yearly professional inspection: Schedule an annual inspection for a deep clean, rail checks, potential re-felting, leather conditioning, levelling, and polishing.

  • Table cover: Always use a genuine pool table cover when not in use to extend the life of your felt.
